Breastfeeding Baby - Less Active Milk Transfer

This suckling patter is associated with less milk transfer or sometimes no milk transfer.

Note the very short movements of this baby's jaws and the absence of swallowing sounds ('kh', 'kh').

This way of suckling does not necessarily indicate a problem, there are moments when a baby suckles this way.

Baby might be sometimes suckling just for comfort or might be only sleepy and not hungry. If baby regularly shows a more active swallowing pattern, this would not be an issue.

At times though, this suckling pattern may indicate suckling and latching difficulties and inadequate milk intake.

If you notice that your baby suckles only or most of the time in this way, promptly seek competent breastfeeding support to make sure things are going the right way and your baby's nutrition is not compromised.
